role: Software Engineer - Backend & Applied ML

Barath S.

Master's graduate in Applied Computer Science, focused on backend engineering, applied machine learning, and security.

About

I recently completed my Master of Applied Computer Science at Concordia University's Gina Cody School, following a Bachelor's in Computer Science and Engineering. My work sits at the intersection of backend engineering, applied machine learning, and security, shaped by an internship in enterprise PKI and certificate infrastructure, as well as projects that combine ML models with real system design, including a multimodal malware detection system and a production-style backend API gateway.

now: open to backend engineering, applied ML, and security roles

Experience

Software Engineer Intern - AppViewX Pvt Ltd

Jan 2024 – Jul 2024

Supported enterprise products for certificate lifecycle and PKI management, with a focus on Cert+ and ADC+.

  • Diagnosed and resolved complex customer issues across the AppViewX GUI, Cert+, and ADC+, addressing application, configuration, and system-level problems within 24-hour turnaround windows.
  • Built Python automation scripts and internal Flask/REST API tools to streamline technical workflows and deployment tasks.
  • Worked hands-on with PKI, digital certificates, OpenSSL, and certificate lifecycle management across enterprise environments, developing and troubleshooting Linux-based services.
  • Investigated network- and security-related issues to identify root causes, collaborating across engineering, product, and design while maintaining technical documentation and test plans.

Featured Projects

Multi-Modal Malware Detection System

VERIFIED

A real-time malware detection system combining image-based static analysis (ResNet50 / EfficientNet) with behavioral analysis (Random Forest), merged through a fusion layer for a single prediction. Includes an interactive Streamlit dashboard for real-time threat visualization and a Watchdog service that automatically scans and flags new files in monitored directories.

PythonPyTorchTensorFlowResNet50EfficientNetScikit-learnStreamlit

Being prepared for public deployment (FastAPI wrapper + Docker containerization in progress).

Voice-Based Emotion Recognition Survey

VERIFIED

A voice-based survey pipeline that recognizes respondent emotions from audio. Includes exploratory data analysis and feature extraction on recordings, tuned SVM classifiers for emotion classification, an automated email pipeline that delivers sentiment summaries to administrators, and full user and technical documentation.

PythonScikit-learnSVMAudio Feature Extraction

SaaS API Gateway

IN PROGRESS

A production-style backend system: a proxy, rate-limiting, and Redis-caching gateway in front of a real upstream API (OpenWeatherMap), built to demonstrate backend engineering, database design, and deployment practices end to end.

FastAPIPostgreSQLRedisCeleryDockerAWS

Currently at the schema design stage — v1 targets a single-provider gateway before a multi-provider phase.
